A narrow-gauge spur line of the Desert & Central Railroad was to be built between Garnet and Castle Mountain to provide transportation for the lead mines. It was some of the roughest terrain in Nevada, and the grade crew had virtually stopped working, so Clint Buchanan was engaged as the new construction boss. That there would be opposition to his assuming the job became clear on his way to the site when three teamsters tried to throw Clint off the caboose. But that was nothing compared to the challenges he faced when he arrived.
